BIG IDEA: Mary’s song of praise expresses two ways to live: Lowly and Lofty.
The way of the lofty is Proud
Pride is the root that bears rotten fruit. Things like envy and lust and sloth and all the rest of the lists we find in God’s word to describe the sinfulness of mankind.
The way of the lofty is Riches
Things aren't bad, but the pursuit of money and things, even the envy of it, can divide your heart.
James 1:10-11 says, “Let the rich boast in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also, will the rich man fade away amidst his pursuit ."
The way of the lofty is Might
In our modern day, Jesus is still a threat to worldly governments, empires and kingdoms. With the endless number of authoritative voices and commentators on every media outlet and internet forum under the sun, it’s easy to forget who’s really running things and who reigns omnipotently.
So, in closing, my questions for you are:
How are you using the power, provision, influence, and connections that God gives you? In what ways might you be using them to build your own throne - or - in what ways are you using them to serve and to raise up others?
